Leeds Bradford International Airport Joins Forces With Leeds City College to Offer Flagship Training Course
3 February 2010
Students undertaking the Public Services course at Leeds City College (LCC) now have the option to take part in a 'hands-on' fire safety module at Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA). The course is a partnership between LBIA's Fire Service and Leeds City College, to give the students a practical learning experience.
The on-site course consists of ten sessions throughout the academic year, each lasting 4 to 5 hours. There are three main objectives: teamwork, communication and discipline. The students are taught specific skills including: fire drills, how to use breathing apparatus, first aid and basic use of hydraulic and hose running. The theory part of the course is taught in college with the practical side taught on site at LBIA's Fire Station with the airport's Fire Crew.
Carl Lapworth, Operations Director at LBIA, said: We are delighted to be able to sponsor this important on-site training and development opportunity for young people in the community. Gaining a realistic insight into the working environment assists students in the course theory and hopefully helps them obtain a job when they graduate? Peter Roberts, Principal and Chief Executive of Leeds City College said: 'Our foundation degree students studying the Public Services programme gain invaluable hands-on experience at Leeds Bradford International Airport. The time spent training with fire safety experts gives a real insight into actual working practices. The partnership between Leeds City College and LBIA is well established. Originally part of a module on a BTEC Public Services course, this practical training but has since been developed and enhanced for our foundation degree students; we hope our work together will continue for many years to come.'
At the end of the year there is a pass out parade and demonstration by the students, which family and friends are invited to.
